club calls on fans to continue positive support

Newsroom Staff
CELTIC Football Club today called on its supporters to continue their positive backing of the club and to continue to observe recently introduced SPL/SFA rules on unacceptable conduct.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “Celtic supporters have become famous for the positive manner in which they support their club and we thank our fans sincerely for this backing.

“As we move into a New Year, we once again call on our fans to show the great support which characterises them and to continue to observe the rules which have been introduced by the footballing authorities.

“Great strides have been made in this area and we are very pleased with the response which we have received from fans. However, it is important that together we continue to be mindful of our responsibilities.

“Fundamentally, as a family club, open to everyone, Celtic fully supports these new guidelines.

“Celtic will not tolerate any form of unacceptable conduct by supporters and will take the appropriate action whenever anyone attempts to bring the club’s name into disrepute.

“In addition, severe penalties have been put in place by the footballing authorities which could affect individuals and indeed the club itself.

“All supporters should be fully aware of the potential impact on the club of any form of negative or unacceptable conduct.

"Celtic fans time and time again show their tremendous backing for the club at home and abroad.

“We are sure that our supporters will continue to observe these rules and continue to represent the club in such a positive manner.”

Mick Dinning, Secretary of the Affiliation of Registered Celtic Supporters’ Clubs, said: “We fully support the new initiative set up with the SFA & SPL in conjunction with Celtic FC.

“We would ask fans to adhere to the new rules and regulations as it is in the best interests of the club.

“We are now sure that genuine supporters understand that there is the possibility of points being deducted from us. This, of course, could happen to us this season if we do not maintain our high standards.

“We ask fans to do what we do best - get behind the team vocally, keeping in mind our responsibility to Celtic FC.”

Joe O’Rourke, General Secretary of the Celtic Supporters’ Association, commented: “As we move into the second year of the SPL/UEFA Guidelines for behaviour at football matches, guidelines which we fully support, we would like to commend the Celtic supporters for their exemplary behaviour, and ask them to continue to strive to support both Celtic FC and the club’s Social Mission Statement to the best of their ability.

“The great worldwide reputation of the Celtic support has been built up over many years by several generations of supporters. It is up to this generation, to maintain and improve it.

“We ask all the supporters to respect these guidelines and to continue to behave in a manner that makes us all proud to be Celtic supporters."
