golden tribute to billy mcneill at falkirk game
Paul Cuddihy
THIS Saturday, August 23, sees the 50th anniversary of Billy McNeill’s debut for Celtic.
The Celtic legend made the first of an incredible 790 appearances for his beloved Hoops in a League Cup tie against Clyde on August 23, 1958, a game that the Celts won 2-0.
No player has played more games for the club than Big Billy, who was with the club as a player until his final game – the Scottish Cup final victory over Airdrie at Hampden in 1975.
Cesar won nine league championships, seven Scottish Cups, six League Cups and, of course, the big one, lifting the European Cup on May 25, 1967.
He then went on to manage the club on two occasions, winning four league titles, three Scottish Cups and the League Cup.
This Saturday’s SPL game against Falkirk at Celtic Park will be a celebration of this milestone in the club’s history, and the legend that is Billy McNeill will be on the pitch at half-time.
So make sure you get along to Paradise for this Saturday’s game against Falkirk to cheer on the Bhoys and pay tribute to a true Celtic great.
