samaras pens permanent deal

Gregor Kyle
CELTIC Football Club can today confirm that centre-forward, Georgios Samaras, has signed a three-year contract with the Scottish champions.

The Greek internationalist put pen-to-paper on a new contract this morning, having made 21 appearances and scoring six goals, including five vital championship counters, in a four-month loan spell last season.

That contribution ultimately played a significant part in Celtic’s third successive championship success under manager, Gordon Strachan and as Samaras explained, made Celtic his ‘first choice’ on leaving Manchester City.

“I am really happy with this move and I think both sides are really happy,” Samaras told celticfc.net. “I wanted to stay here, Celtic wanted to keep me here and both sides are happy with this transfer.

“Last season was four really enjoyable months for me and a great experience for me to play in both the Scottish Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

“I think we finished in the best possible way, winning the championship and I am really proud of what we achieved.

“It was the best moment in my career so far,” added Samaras, “and I am really happy that I have signed here and I hope that more good moments come for both me and the club.”

Last season was a campaign punctuated by dramatic twists and concluded in the most extraordinary fashion, with the players clawing their way back into title contention and seizing the trophy on a dramatic and immensely enjoyable final day.

That experience has whetted the striker's appetite and he will rejoin his team-mates midway through pre-season training, looking forward to the new campaign.

“Celtic FC is one of the best teams in Europe with a very distinguished football manager,” he commented. “His unique way and unconditional desire to see me in his squad persuaded me to sign for the club.

“The same goes for the fans. They showed their support to me and with their dedication and excitement, they helped me decide that this is the right club for me.

“The important element for my decision, however, was the fact that there is a family atmosphere around here.

“We all respect each other and help each other, there is understanding and tolerance and these are all necessary ingredients for the success of a club and for the personal development of a football player.

“Finally, I am waiting for the start of the new season so I can help my team to repeat the successes of the last season. With the help of the fans, it is my view that we will achieve great things.”
