robson: we've been showing good form

David Friel
BARRY ROBSON insists it’s a pleasure to be part of such a free-scoring Celtic side after the reigning champions roared back to the top of the SPL at the weekend.

The Hoops’ 4-0 demolition of Hamilton Academical, coupled with Rangers’ 1-0 defeat at St Mirren, leaves Gordon Strachan’s side leading the standings on goal difference.

And Robson, who helped Celtic make it 14 goals from their last four SPL matches, is confident the Hoops are hitting top form at the right time.

“We have scored a lot of goals recently and done well,” he said. “I don’t think people realised how good a team Villarreal were, but we played really well over there in midweek in the first half.

“Even against Aalborg in the UEFA Champions League, we put them under huge pressure but never managed to get a goal.

“All in all, it has been pretty good stuff recently and we need to continue that. We have good momentum behind us and we'll come back from the international break determined to keep it going.”

Strikers Scott McDonald and Georgios Samaras netted against Accies and Robson was delighted to see the Australian grab his third goal of the season.

“How can people give him stick when he scored 31 goals last time and this season has barely started?” said Robson. “He’s a strong wee guy and he'll bang loads of goals in again.

"Big Samaras also scored again and he can be anything he wants to be when he gets going. It bears positively for the club because our strikers are firing on all cylinders.”

With Lee Naylor injured, Robson filled in at left-back and drew praise from his manager. However, the modest midfielder insists any comparisons with Paolo Maldini are premature.

“No, there's no new career unfolding for me,” he laughed. “Lee injured his back and the manager just asked me to play in there.

“Doing your bit to help the team is the main thing, but I’m quite confident of getting a game in the middle of the park.”
