  • Celtic Women sign keeper Cunningham for 2016 season

Celtic Women sign keeper Cunningham for 2016 season

By: Newsroom Staff on 10 Dec, 2015 11:03

  • CELTIC yesterday completed the signing of Megan Cunningham as they continued to build their squad for the 2016 summer season.

With most of last season’s first-team squad already enrolled, the addition of a player with good Scottish Women’s Premier League experience confirms the Hoops’ ambition to compete at the very top of the Scottish game.

At 20-years-old, goalkeeper Megan Cunningham had already spent four seasons with Celtic after signing in March 2009.

Such was her good form that she was promoted from the 15s’ age group straight into the first-team squad.

Megan told the official Celtic Website:  “It was great experience being in the first-team squad, where there was great competition for places.

“It was frustrating, however, to be on the bench almost every week.  I felt that I had to get experience playing in the top division, so reluctantly I moved to Hamilton Academical in February 2012.

“At Hamilton I was first choice and felt my game had really progressed.  When I had the opportunity to challenge myself further by moving to Glasgow City, I did so at the start of last season.

“After starting a few games at the start of the season – mainly friendlies and cup matches – I found myself back on the bench every week.”

She added: “I had always told Celtic that I’d want to come back, so when I was invited, I jumped at the chance.  There is a feeling in the game that there is something growing at Celtic and I certainly want to be part of that.

“I know that there other good keepers at the club, but I want to make myself first choice and am very much looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m also looking forward to working with goalkeeping coach Jonny McFarlane whom I rate very highly.”

Hoops manager David Haley said:  “I am very pleased to welcome Megan back to Celtic.  It is very satisfying to be able to attract such a talented player to the club.”
