  • Simunovic pleased with his Celtic debut

Simunovic pleased with his Celtic debut

By: Paul Cuddihy on 18 Sep, 2015 15:42

  • CELTIC’S latest debut Bhoy came through his first test with flying colours and though, like his team-mates, Jozo Simunovic would have loved to have left the Amsterdam ArenA with all three points, he was still pleased with the performance and result.

The Croatian defender partnered Dedryck Boyata in the heart of the Celtic defence, and he looked assured in possession, particularly in the high-pressure atmosphere of a UEFA Europa League tie against Ajax.

Reflecting on his debut, Simunovic said: “It was a very good game and I enjoyed it. For me, it was another experience. I have never played a match like last night and it was a good experience.

“Maybe we could have got all three points but we were down to 10 men at the end of the game, so a draw was okay.”

The other game in Group A saw Norwegian side, Molde, produce a stunning 3-1 victory away to Fenerbahce in Turkey.

But having already faced Molde this season while still playing for Dinamo Zagbreb, Simunovic knows that they will be tough opponents – Zagreb progressed on the away goals rule.

“Our group is tight and it is a good group,” he said. “We need to focus on ourselves. It depends on ourselves and it matters how we do on the pitch.

“I played against Molde for my previous side and they were a very good team so I’m not that surprised.

“It’s too difficult to say what will happen as we have played only one game and we will see game-by-game. The important thing is that we give 100 per cent in every match and the results will come.

“I believe in myself, my team and my team-mates, and we need to focus on our own task so we know what everyone is doing.”

Cheer on Jozo Simunovic and his Celtic team-mates when they’re next in UEFA Europa League action on Thursday, October 1 against Fenerbahce at Celtic Park. Ticket details HERE
