Henderson: Rosenborg experience a valuable learning curve

By: Mark Henderson on 08 Jul, 2015 14:51

  • LIAM Henderson believes his three-month spell at Rosenborg saw him develop as a person and a footballer.

The 19-year-old returned to Celtic for the start of pre-season after a profitable temporary move with the Trondheim-based team, where he made nine league appearances and scored three goals.

Playing in a country at such a young age was a steep learning curve for the midfielder but an enjoyable one.

And now he’s full of confidence and vigour as he prepares for the challenge of forcing his way into the Hoops starting XI over the coming campaign.

“It’s really good being back in and seeing all the boys,” said the teenager. “I really enjoyed it in Norway but it’s good to be back. It has made me a better player and better person.

“I’ve learned a lot in such a short space of time. I have really grown up and become more mature so I’m sure that will really help me in the future.

“They wanted to keep me but the gaffer wanted me back here so that was a great confidence-booster for me, and I was really looking forward to coming back in.

“The goal is to come back in training, try to do well and catch the eye. I have been working hard in training, and hopefully I can try to continue that and impress in the friendly matches.

“Living by myself, I realised what I had back here and maybe I took it for granted. But out there, I realised how much it means to play for Celtic and how much I want to do well here.

“Missing my friends and family was a big part of it as well, but I’m delighted to be back and I’m enjoying training which is good.

“It was the first time living myself, so I had to cook and clean and you do grow up a lot. One of the main things for me was to go out there and become a better person and get more life experience, along with the football side, so that really helped me.

“My all-round game knowledge, thinking more about the game, was the most I learned out there, though I am only 19 and that comes with age as well.

“Rosenborg were very similar to what we do here. The training was very similar and all the boys were brand new, along with the coaching staff, so it was pretty easy to fit in. It’s a great club and hopefully they can win the league.

“The main thing is doing well in training, working hard and keeping my head down, and if I do that then hopefully my opportunity will come again. I will just wait for it and then hopefully I can take it with both hands.”

The Celtic Youth Academy graduate knows he faces a fight to break into the side with the likes of Scott Brown and Nir Bitton forming a formidable central-midfield partnership in the second half of last season.

However, he knows that working alongside these established international players on a daily basis can only accelerate his development.

“It’s tough but you’re learning off international players like Scott Brown and Nir, which is priceless experience and I just take so much stuff from them,” he said.

“I’m learning from them every day which can only be good for me. I have always had confidence but that’s partly down to the manager and the players I play with, they make you feel confident, so that’s something I never lacked."

Henderson was speaking ahead of Friday’s meeting with David Moyes’ Real Sociedad. The last remaining tickets for the match, which kicks-off at 7.45pm, are available now ONLY from the Celtic Park Ticket Office ahead of Friday night’s match priced at £12 for adults and £5 for concessions.
