Griffiths: We'll soon be back to our best

By: Mark Henderson on 05 Jul, 2015 20:55

  • LEIGH Griffiths insists Celtic will be far further forward in their conditioning by the time they face La Liga side Real Sociedad next Friday in their final pre-season friendly before the UEFA Champions League fixtures get underway.

The Hoops were beaten 5-3 by Dukla Prague yesterday (Saturday) at St Mirren Park, with Griffiths among the scorers for the Bhoys.

The Czech side had already played four games in their pre-season and ultimately their superior fitness levels proved pivotal.

For Griffiths and many of Celtic’s international stars, it was their first outing of the summer and the striker told Celtic TV that he and the rest of the Hoops squad will benefit from the workout and more training sessions over the coming days.

He said: “It was good. I felt good for 45 minutes and I started to tire around the 60 minutes mark. We have only been back training since Monday and it was good to get an hour under my belt and I will be raring to go next week.

“You want to get fitness but we want to win games as well and it was disappointing not to win it, but it was only a friendly and we have another one to go before the Champions League game.

“We pressed them well in the first half, though it was disappointing defending from our point of view but we showed what we were going forward and creating chances. After 75 minutes they started popping the ball about and we looked a bit tired and jaded.

“We will have a full week’s training before we play Sociedad. It will be good test for us but we will be raring to go. They are a great side and have had some good results in La Liga and hopefully we can show what we are all about.”
