  • Craig Gordon is Celtic’s No.1

    Craig Gordon is Celtic’s No.1

By: Martin Dalziel on 13 May, 2015 10:52

  • CRAIG Gordon has capped off a stellar first season at Celtic by getting his hands on the No.1 jersey for the Scottish champions.

The Scotland internationalist currently wears No.26 for the Bhoys but will move into the No.1 shirt for the start of next season after his saves and performances in goal helped the club win a league and League Cup double in his first year at Paradise.

In an exclusive interview with the official Celtic website the Hoops star said he was full of pride after being named the club’s No.1.

“It means a lot to goalkeepers,” he said. “All the top goalkeepers across the world are No.1 and it’s a very traditional number for a keeper and one that I’ve had most of my career.

“It’s huge for me. It’s the trademark of goalkeepers and people talk about them being ‘the No.1’ whether they wear it on their back or not but to actually be known as the Celtic No.1 and have that on my back is something that all goalkeepers aspire to.

“There’s a sense of pride in wearing it. The club has a rich history with goalkeepers and even lately the goalkeepers that have worn the No.1 jersey have been great performers for the club, so to have that number and responsibility adds something extra to it.”

Hoops star Gordon had spent two years out of football due to injury before he joined the champions on their pre-season tour of Austria last summer but he quickly began to show that he had lost none of the skill or ability which had seen him become one of the top keepers in Britain.

He recorded a clean sheet on his first league match for the Bhoys but it was in Europe where the former Hearts and Sunderland keeper really began to shine.

An incredible one-handed save away from home to FC Salzburg in a 2-2 draw in the opening match of the UEFA Europa League group stages gave fans a glimpse of what was to come from their new signing and he continued to impress throughout the campaign.

The Celtic goalie has another two years left on his contract with the champions and after finishing his first season with a double dose of silverware and his name on the No.1 jersey, he added that he is hungry for more success at the Hoops.

“It has gone well this season and I’m happy with my first year back,” he said. “It was a little bit of a step into the unknown for me to get back into playing football but I don’t think I could ask for an awful lot more from my first season.

“We got two trophies, very close to being three, and we’ve played some good football along the way. I’m delighted with the way things have gone as we’ve not lost too many goals and I think it has been a pretty good season.

“I’m very happy here. I want to take it one year at a time but also try to replicate what we did this year then improve on that and improve in Europe. Personally I am still developing within the team.

“We set our goals for this season and we have achieved as much and probably more than what I set out to achieve at the start of the season, so next year I’ll be setting my goals for what I want to do in the next season.

“I’m delighted to be here, very happy with how things are going and now I want to look to the future both personally and as part of the club.”
