  • Griffiths wins April's SPFL Player of the Month award

Griffiths wins April's SPFL Player of the Month award

By: Martin Dalziel on 10 May, 2015 00:01

  • CELTIC striker Leigh Griffiths has celebrated a remarkable four weeks by winning the SPFL Player of the Month award for April.

The Hoops star netted seven goals in six games for the champions over the course of the month, including two hat-tricks, one of which came on his 50th appearance for the Celts as the team beat Dundee United 3-0 at Tannadice.

Griffiths’ goals helped the champions power to Premiership glory for the fourth season in a row and also saw him collect the top goalscorer accolade at the club’s recent Player of the Year awards ceremony.

Today’s recognition from the SPFL has acknowledged a stunning run of form for the Edinburgh-born striker and he told the official Celtic website that he has been pleased with his performances.

“I’ve hit a good patch of form and scored two hat-tricks so it might have been difficult for the voting panel to go elsewhere,” he said.

“Last season Kris Commons and Anthony Stokes and I were sharing the goals but this season it’s been more one man each month. After that it has been someone else that has been top goalscorer each month, but thankfully April has been mine.

“It’s just a confidence thing. Whoever has that jersey up front will be confident of scoring goals.”

Winning the POTM award has capped off a fantastic 2015 for Griffiths but he conceded that his season could have turned out so differently. The striker found himself out of Ronny Deila’s early season plans, but a heart-to-heart with the Norwegian outlined what would be expected of him as Celtic’s main forward and he has not looked back since.

Griffiths has now scored 26 goals in 51 games for Celtic and he managed to notch the same tally of goals in April that he did in his first half-season for the Bhoys.

The striker added: “Since the turn of the year I’ve hit a good run of form and people are seeing the real Leigh Griffiths that was at Hibs a couple of seasons ago and was scoring goals for fun in the Premier League.

“My goals-to-games ratio is now up there with the best. It’s a good stat and it was great to score a hat-trick on my 50th appearance.

“It has been an incredible season when you look at it like that but it might not have happened if I didn’t buck up my ideas after I spoke with the manager.

“I could have just sulked and said, ‘Right, that’s my Celtic career over,’ but I didn’t because I wanted to prove everyone wrong and show that I was the main man.”

Griffiths has certainly achieved that goal and you can read more from the Player of the Month in an exclusive interview in this week’s Celtic View, on sale from Wednesday, May 13.
