    Matthews: Craig's a top goalkeeper

By: Mark Henderson on 18 Apr, 2015 11:51

  • ADAM Matthews admits the sensational standards set by Craig Gordon this season surpassed his initial expectations.

The Welshman knew Celtic’s No.1 was a goalkeeper of high repute but he was unsure whether he would still be the same player after his horrendous two year spell on the treatment table.

Gordon quickly proved, however, that he was still at the top of his game with a series of superb showings between the sticks.

And Matthews believes the Scotland internationalist is rightly in the running as the individual prizes are prepared to be handed out.

“Craig Gordon has been brilliant since coming in for Fraser,” said the full-back. “Obviously Fraser was going to be a big miss, but Craig has come in and it’s like Fraser hasn’t even gone.

“Craig had done really considering the injuries he has had. To be honest, he’s surprised me. I knew he was a good keeper but I thought he would have lost a bit of spring but he’s been excellent for us.

“He has a bit of everything. He’s big, comes for crosses and he’s a good shot-stopper and commands his box really. With the bad injuries he has had, you would think it would have taken him a bit of time to get over them.

“You could see in the European games at the start of the season that he was still a brilliant keeper and kept us in a lot of games. He’s a great lad around the dressing room. He’s quite quiet but he brings a lot and he’s quite intelligent, so the boys go to him when they don’t have a clue what’s going on!

“Virgil, Browny and Steff have been terrific as well, and they are the four standouts for us really. They have given us a good spine to the team and won us a lot of games and they deserve a lot of credit.”
