Celtic Graves Society event for Jimmy McMenemy

By: Newsroom Staff on 20 Nov, 2014 08:13

  • THE latest Celtic Graves Society event will take place this Saturday, November 22 to commemorate the final resting place of Celtic legend, Jimmy McMenemy.

The event, at St Peter’s Cemetery, Dalbeth, takes place at 12noon, and among the confirmed speakers are former Celtic chairman, Brian Quinn, Lisbon Lion Jim Craig, and author David Potter, who wrote a biography of Jimmy McMenemy.

Members of the McMenemy family will also be in attendance, while a blessing will be conducted at the graveside.

Jimmy ‘Napoleon’ McMenemy (pictured above, front row, second right) was a key member of the legendary six-in-a-row side between 1905-10 and also the four-in-a-row side between 1914-17, making a total of 515 appearances for Celtic, scoring an impressive 168 goals.

In total, he won 11 league titles and six Scottish Cups, and is rightly regarded as one of Celtic’s greatest ever players.

Willie Maley wrote of the player: ‘Jimmy McMenemy, a typical Celtic player, earned the cognomen ‘Napoleon’ for the strategy with which his every move was imbued, and his wonderful positional sense. The football pitch to him was a chess-board; he was continually scheming and plotting, and seldom if ever troubled himself with the physical side of the game – he had no need.’

All Celtic supporters are welcome to attend the event this Saturday, November 22, and flowers/tributes can be laid at the graveside.
