Matthews impressed by Celtic's new No.1

By: Mark Henderson on 17 Oct, 2014 15:13

  • CRAIG Gordon has arguably been Celtic’s stand-out player in the early part of the campaign, with the goalkeeper’s fantastic form earning him a recall to the Scotland squad.

Despite spending two years out of the game through serious injury, the 31-year-old has settled into life at Paradise following his arrival on a free transfer in the summer.

Consistent and assured between the sticks, some of his saves have simply been breathtaking and have proved to be the difference in the Hoops picking up a positive result, particularly in the European arena.

Although Adam Matthews always rated the former Sunderland shot-stopper highly, he didn’t expect him to hit top form so soon after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

And the defender believes the signing of Craig Gordon has been a brilliant piece of business by the club, filling the huge void left by Fraser Forster with remarkable ease.

“I thought Craig was good but felt it would take him a bit of time to get back into it,” the Welshman told this week's Celtic View. "He has been great for us and been our most consistent player since coming in, and hopefully he can keep it going and keep making great saves.

“After being two years out of the game, I thought he would take a bit of time to get back into it. But straight away you could see how good he was.

“He has to be right up there in terms of his shot-stopping and his handling. He and Fraser are the two keepers that stick out for me.

“Fraser was a great player for us in the time I have been here. He was a big loss but Celtic have done good business bringing Craig in for free as he is a brilliant keeper. Fraser was a miss but Craig has filled his boots very well.”
