  • Gordon Strachan's praise for Craig Gordon

Gordon Strachan's praise for Craig Gordon

By: Martin Dalziel on 10 Oct, 2014 14:25

  • CRAIG Gordon’s sparkling form for Celtic has won the praise of his national team boss, Gordon Strachan.

The former Celtic manager spoke of his admiration of the Hoops keeper’s return to the game ahead of Scotland's Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia tomorrow (Saturday) and said it was a 'huge bonus' for the shot-stopper to be back in action.

The Scotland boss said: “It’s a huge bonus for everybody. If you said two years ago that we’d be in this position you would have thought it was going to be hard work for him, but the good thing about it is that the one person who determines his future decided, ‘No, this is not the end. I can go on from here.’

“Everyone talks about how you need a good back-up or you need good people around you but it all depends on what you’re like as a person to drive yourself forward, and he has got himself back into spectacular form for Celtic.”

Craig Gordon’s summer move to Celtic saw him reappear on the national team’s radar and it wasn’t long before he was included in the squad.

He travelled with the team to Germany for the narrow defeat to the World Cup holders in September but watched on from the bench as Cardiff City and former Celtic keeper David Marshall took the No.1 spot for the game.

But the current Celtic goalkeeper could be in line to make his return to action tomorrow in Scotland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia, although his national manager was tight-lipped on his selection ahead of the game.

The Scotland boss said: “I’ll pick who I think is the best goalkeeper for this game. It’s the same for who is the best striker for this game and who is the best full-back for this game, and obviously you take in to consideration how the lads have been playing.

“It’s fantastic that they’re both doing really well. I know who’s going to play but I'll name the team tomorrow (Saturday).”
