    Manager delighted with team's commitment

By: Martin Dalziel in Austria on 18 Sep, 2014 21:16

  • RONNY Deila was happy with his team’s commitment following the 2-2 draw with FC Salzburg in Austria.

The Hoops led twice in the match, their first in the UEFA Europa League group stages, but were pegged back by two goals from the Austrian champions.

The Celtic manager felt a draw was a fair result on the balance of play but said that he was delighted with his side’s teamwork in an entertaining match.

Speaking after the match, he said: “It was a good result against a very good team. They are a difficult team to play against with their intensity and quick, fit players.

“We worked much better as a team tonight and stood the distance better over the 90 minutes, but they deserved the draw in the end.

“They had chances but we had a fantastic goalkeeper tonight. That’s important but I’m pleased with the point and happy with the performance.”

Celtic took the lead early in the first-half through debut Bhoy Mubarak Wakaso, but the hosts drew level after Alan capitalised on a through ball and scorec courtesy of a lucky deflection off Efe Ambrose.

Salzburg could have gone into the break in the lead and could have also taken the three points in the closing stages were it not for the heroics of Celtic goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, who stole the show with a string of fine saves.

Ronny Deila praised the shot-stopper for his performance but said he knew that the Scotland internationalist was capable of such saves.

He added: “Craig Gordon was marvellous. He has been good all season but he is also progressing and getting better. He’s a top professional, a fantastic man and I am so glad to have him.

“I only saw him on TV when he played for Sunderland but our goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods said he was ready and fit. He’s fantastic and we knew that but Woodsy has also trained him well.

“He is a fantastic signing for us. We now have a great goalie but a good coach too.”
