Celtic players backing MAESTRIO charity match

By: Newsroom Staff on 24 Aug, 2014 11:01

  • THE Celtic first-team squad have got right behind the forthcoming MAESTRIO Charity Match before their encounter with Inverness Caley Thistle on Saturday, proudly wearing t-shirts illustrating their support during the pre-match warm-up.

We are currently confronted with daily images of the horrors facing children and families in a number of Middle East countries and shock waves can be felt around the world.

In the spirit of our founding fathers, the generosity and compassion of the Celtic Family is unique and unsurpassed and this match gives us a wonderful opportunity to respond to the current crises as a collective unit.

Celtic FC Foundation have selected UNICEF and War Child as main beneficiaries of the match, which is in partnership with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.

It will take place on Sunday, September 7 at Celtic Park (KO: 2pm) and will see the return of Paul McStay to Paradise as his Maestros squad take on Rio Ferdinand’s All Stars.

UNICEF and War Child take no sides in conflict. The Club’s charitable arm will assist in their humanitarian work in a number of current Middle East countries.  Funds will also assist local projects.

The Rio Ferdinand Foundation will work with local community partners in both London and across Townships in South Africa to support and assist children, young people and families suffering the effects of poverty, violence and abuse on a day-to-day basis.

Preparations for the game, sponsored by Flip and Magners, are gathering pace and it is shaping up to be a wonderful Celtic Family occasion.

The squads are now almost in place and include some top names Celtic names such as Harald Brattbakk, John Hartson, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Stiliyan Petrov, Lubo Moravcik and actors James McAvoy, Martin Compston and Ross McCall, who have all signed up for the McStay’s Maestros squad.

Being a fierce competitor, Rio is pulling together a formidable squad and confirmed names include Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Marc Overmars, Gianfranco Zola, Martin Keown, Joe Cole, One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, comedian Jack Whitehall, actors Tom Cullen and Ralf Little and Rizzle Kicks star, Harley Alexander.

There’s still time to play your part and support this unique charity event, which epitomise the core essence of our Club’s humble beginnings.
