CELTIC are delighted today to announce that our international full-backs, Emilio Izaguirre and Mikael Lustig, have both signed new three-year contracts with the Club.
Discussions with both players have been ongoing in recent months and everyone at the Club is very pleased that they have both committed their futures to Celtic.
After a successful World Cup with Honduras back in 2010, Emilio signed for Celtic from Honduran side, Motagua, in August 2010. And the left-back proved to be an instant hit with supporters.
His outstanding performances throughout the season saw him voted Scotland’s Player of the Year. The following season, he was unfortunate to sustain a leg break early in the campaign, but since returning from injury, he has remained a vital member of the Celtic squad, winning three league titles in a row.
He has made 151 appearances for the Hoops, scoring one goal.
Swedish internationalist Mikael Lustig signed for Celtic from Norwegian side, Rosenborg in January 2012. While his first few months at the club were punctuated with some niggling injuries, Mikael has gone on to be an impressive and consistent performer for the team.
He was in outstanding form in the season just past, and although he had to take time out for a hip operation, he made a welcome return towards the end of the campaign.
He will play his part again as the club go for four-in-a-row and aim to make it into the UEFA Champions League for a third consecutive season. Mikael has made 71 appearances for Celtic, scoring five goals, including a spectacular effort against Hearts last season in a 7-0 win.
Mikael said today: “I am absolutely delighted to sign this new contract with the Club. Ever since I came to Celtic I have felt welcomed and I have enjoyed every minute of my time here.
“It has been brilliant to win trophies here and I hope we can go again next season and bring more silverware to Celtic and achieve one of our main objectives in the next few months and take Celtic to the Champions League again.
“It is, of course, disappointing that Neil has left the Club as manager and obviously all the players wish him all the best for the future. However, I knew that I wanted to be part of Celtic going forward and I am so pleased that I have been able to commit my future to such a great Club.
"Like all the other players at Celtic, I will work hard with the new manager and do all I can to bring our fans more and more success.”
Emilio Izaguirre said: “Celtic is a place I have called home for a number of years now and it is the place where I want to be in the future. It is a magnificent football club in a great city, somewhere my family have settled so well.
“I would like to thank the Celtic fans for all the support they have given me over these years and I now want to look forward to many more happy and successful times with these supporters.”
