Celtic Graves Society event to remember Peter Dowds

By: Paul Cuddihy on 28 Feb, 2014 12:02

  • THE latest Celtic Graves Society event takes place this Saturday, March 1 at Abbey Cemetery, Elderslie, Renfrewshire to mark the resting place of Peter Dowds, one of Celtic’s early greats. The ceremony is at 11.30am, and will include a number of speakers.

Peter Dowds (pictured above second right, back row, 1889) was born in Johnstone and had two spells with Celtic, first joining the club in 1889. He made his debut against Hearts on August 23, 1890 when he scored a goal in a 5-0 away win for the Celts.

He was also in the Celtic team which won the Scottish Cup for the first time, beating Queen’s Park 5-1 in April 1892. He joined Aston Villa a month later, the lure of higher wages too great to resist, but two years later he was back at Celtic Park.

However, he did not play too many more games for the club, as his health began to fail. Peter Dowds died tragically from tuberculosis on September 3, 1895 aged only 24, the first Celt to die while still a player. He made 49 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals.

His final resting place in Abbey Cemetery had previously been unmarked but now, thanks to the work of the Celtic Graves Society, his grave will be marked, blessed, and his memory remembered by supporters this Saturday (11.30am).

Directions to Abbey Cemetery, Abbey Road, Elderslie, Renfrewshire.
