CELTIC’S newest recruit, Virgil van Dijk conducted his first interview at the side of the Celtic Park pitch.
And the highly-rated Dutch Under-21 internationalist couldn’t hide his admiration for the stadium or his excitement at joining the Scottish double winners.
The 21-year-old defender has joined Celtic on a four-year deal, swapping the green and white stripes of Dutch side FC Groningen for the green and white hoops of Celtic.
And wearing the new home kit for the 2013/14 season, Virgil van Dijk explained his delight at joining the biggest club in Scotland, and one of football’s most famous names.
“It feels very good and I’m very excited to be here,” he told the official Celtic website. “I’m really looking forward to playing here for Celtic.
“Celtic is the biggest club in Scotland and they also play in the Champions League. They’re a fantastic club and when Celtic came in for me I was so excited. Everything here is good so I can’t wait to get started.
"I hope to play many games for my country in the future but first of all I want to make things happen here.”
Celtic’s latest signing began his career with Willem II in 2009 before moving to FC Groningen a year later, and he has been an integral part of the team for the past three seasons, during which time he has also been capped at Under-21 level by Holland.
As for what he will bring to Neil Lennon’s Scottish champions, the new Bhoy said: “I’m a strong defender and I’m good in the air, but I also like to play football on the ground, and I hope that we’ll do even better than we did last season.
“I saw Celtic’s game against Barcelona, and it was a fantastic match. The atmosphere inside the stadium was amazing and the fans were incredible, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of the Celtic fans as well.”
And the continuity of club colours with both FC Groningen and Celtic wearing green and white has made Virgil van Dijk feel instantly at home.
“It’s not on purpose,” he laughed, “but they’re nice colours and I like the kit. It’s beautiful.”
Virgil van Dijk is the latest recruit to Celtic´s Double-winning squad following the arrival of striker, Amido Balde from Portuguese side, Vitoria Guimaraes
