  • Mikael Lustig delighted to finally be a Celt

Mikael Lustig delighted to finally be a Celt

By: Laura Brannan on 30 Dec, 2011 12:08

  • MIKAEL Lustig watched his new club storm to the top of the SPL from the stands on Wednesday night, but after signing a pre-contract with Celtic in October, it was finally his turn to pull the Hoops on.

The Swedish right-back was officially unveiled as the Hoops’ newest addition at Lennoxtown this morning, (Friday), after completing his move from Norwegian side, Rosenborg.

And the 25-year old is delighted to have the deal completed so he can continue the strong connection Celtic already have with his country.

“I have been waiting for this moment for two months now and it feels really good to finally be here,” he said, facing the Scottish press for the first time. “I first heard Celtic were interested in me a year and a half ago so I watched a lot of their games and it always felt like a good club for me.

“Henrik Larsson put Celtic on to the map in Sweden so I had already seen many of their games and there are many fans who already cheer them on. I didn’t speak to him about my move but I’ve heard him say a lot of good things about the club and Glasgow.

“I talked to Daniel (Majstorovic) a little bit before I signed for the club, though, and he really enjoys it here with the fans and in this city. He was very positive and told me to be myself, play my game and don’t be ashamed – just to go for it.”

Lustig comes into the squad while they are high in confidence on the back of nine consecutive league victories. But the recent form of Cha Du Ri and Adam Matthews, along with Mark Wilson´s expected return to training next week, the new Bhoy knows it will be difficult to work his way into the starting XI.

The demand for places excites him, however, and he is looking forward to the challenge which lies ahead.

“If I am needed at centre-back then I can play there but I am a right-back and that’s where I want to play,” he said. “I am quite an offensive player. I want to score goals and make good passes and I think the way Celtic play will suit me well.

“It will probably be difficult for me to get into the starting line-up but I hope it is because then it means we have good players here. We want to go to the Champions League and win the title, and if you want that it is going to be hard to get into the team.

“I come from Rosenborg, in Norway, and it’s like Celtic where there is pressure in every game. We wanted to win the league every day there and it’s going to be the same here.”

The defender enjoyed his first experience at Celtic Park midweek when he watched his new team-mates beat Rangers 1-0. But despite looking forward to playing in a similar atmosphere himself, he will have to be patient.

“It was the first derby I had seen live and the atmosphere was really good,” Lustig said. “I heard the derby is something special and I agree, it was really nice. I was sitting in the audience with a smile.

“I had a really long season in Norway, though, so in December I have taken it easy and it will be a few weeks before I will be ready to play.”
