Barkas: When I heard Celtic were interested it was an easy decision

By: Joe Donnelly on 30 Jul, 2020 17:01

  • AS soon as Celtic announced their interest in Vasilis Barkas, the Greek goalkeeper knew exactly where he wanted to be. The former AEK Athens stopper signed on a four-year deal at Paradise today (Thursday), and held his first press conference at the club’s Lennoxtown Training Centre this afternoon.

The 26-year-old said he’s now raring to go, and can’t wait to help the Hoops win trophies in the coming months.

“I’m very happy to come to this very big club and I can’t wait to play my first game,” Celtic's latest signing said. “I also can’t wait to train with my team-mates tomorrow morning (Friday). I know how important the season ahead is for Celtic. It’s not just 10IAR, it’s Celtic, we are expected to win every championship. Neil Lennon told me about the club, what they expect from me and I’m ready to show that I’m ready to play for this club.

“The manager told me about the fans, and I like that and the pressure. If the coach wants me to play, I’m ready. I came here to play. I’m very excited to get playing competitive football again.”

Barkas said he was well aware of Celtic’s rich history before making the move, and while upping sticks from one country to another isn’t without its challenges, this decision was an easy one to make.

He added: “It’s something very different when you leave one country for another. When my manager, my father told me that Celtic wanted me to come here, I didn’t need think about it. It’s a very good chance for me to play for a very big club.

“I have one very good friend who has a good relationship with Samaras. He told me he said it’s a very good team and the fans are crazy for the team. I really want to see this.

“I’ve already played in the Champions League. I might be young, but I don’t feel pressure to play here. I can’t wait to play for Celtic.”
