The Story Of… When Celtic celebrated a century of trophies

By: Joe Donnelly on 26 Jun, 2020 17:01

  • 'The Story Of' is a web series dedicated to small but special tales from Celtic’s illustrious history. Here, we remember the first trophy of the Invincibles Treble.

WHEN Celtic overcame Aberdeen 3-0 in the League Cup final on November 27, 2016, the win marked the club’s 100th silverware success.

Goals from James Forrest, Tom Rogic and Moussa Dembele helped Brendan Rodgers win his first trophy as manager, which at the time marked the Hoops’ 16th League Cup, and complimented their 47 league titles, 36 Scottish Cups and one European Cup to that point.

From there, Celtic would of course finish the 2016/17 campaign unbeaten to clinch the Invincibles Treble. The seasons which followed were equally successful, which in hindsight underlines the importance of this triumph as it laid the foundations of what was to follow.

“We really pressed the game aggressively and we showed our quality when we had the ball,” Brendan Rodgers told the Celtic View at Hampden. “I was pleased to see us play with that calmness and, apart from that 10-minute spell in the second half, which you expect when Aberdeen had to throw everything, in the main, we controlled the game very well.

“I am delighted for the football club. It’s about six months to the week I came in and we talked about what we wanted to achieve and how we wanted to do it and we are certainly well on our way to doing that. I was very pleased with the performance.

“It’s something tangible to show. Everyone has talked about the great start and the great football, but you want something to show for it. This was our first chance and I felt they were magnificent."
