  • Big Sammy's farewell from the spot in 3-in-a-row Title Party

Big Sammy's farewell from the spot in 3-in-a-row Title Party

By: Joe Donnelly on 11 May, 2020 18:01

  • WITH 15 minutes of normal time remaining of the 2013/14 campaign, Georgios Samaras latched on to an Anthony Stokes pass, tapped the ball past Dundee United stopper Radoslaw Cierzniak and was hauled to the ground inside the box. Stokes had netted Celtic’s 100th goal of the season 10 minutes earlier, and now the Greek striker had the chance to make it two from the penalty spot.

By sending the keeper the wrong way, he did exactly that. A few weeks later, Samaras would swap Paradise for West Brom’s Hawthorns after six-and-a-half years in Glasgow. His goal from 12 yards against United on May 11, 2014 – on this day six years ago – would mark his last at Celtic Park.

Later that afternoon, on the Hoops’ third successive Trophy Day, a Filip Twardzick own goal and a late Kris Commons strike left the scoreline at 4-1 in the champions’ favour.

“It was a great way to finish the season,” Neil Lennon told the Celtic View after the game. “In the first half we were a bit flat and were sort of in testimonial mode, but in the second half we were a lot better and had some great chances on the counter attack as well.  It was good they saw through it, and to get 99 points and over 100 goals was a fantastic return.

“Stokesy and Kris have had great season and it was nice for Sammy to come on, and I think it was the perfect way for him to end his time here

“It was another good gesture from Kris, as he let Stokesy take a penalty for a hat-trick a couple of weeks ago and he’s done it again for Sami. I was delighted he scored it obviously and he’s been a fantastic player for the club and if he does go he goes with our best wishes.”
