  • The Story of… David Marshall’s breathtaking Barca shut-out

The Story of… David Marshall’s breathtaking Barca shut-out

By: Joe Donnelly on 12 May, 2020 17:01

  • 'The Story Of' is a web series dedicated to small but special tales from Celtic’s illustrious history. Here, we remember David Marshall's showstopping Barca performance.

WHEN Alan Thompson hit the net against Barcelona on March 4, 2004, Celtic Park was in dreamland. By full-time, Martin O’Neill’s men had upset one of Europe’s top sides, but still had to travel to the Nou Camp for their UEFA Cup last 16 second leg three weeks later.

Defending the slimmest of aggregate margins, the Hoops dug deep and fought for their lives against a team that boasted the likes of Overmars, Puyol, Xavi, Luis Enrique, Ronaldinho and Luis Garcia.

The Catalan giants enjoyed the majority of possession and opportunities, but an astounding Man of the Match-winning performance from then 19-year-old keeper David Marshall kept Celtic’s Euro journey alive, as the young stopper produced top-class save after top-class save to thwart the opposition.

In for the suspended Rab Douglas, who had been sent off following a half-time altercation in the tunnel during the tie’s first leg, Marshall delivered an inspired performance on the continent - one which Celtic fans will continue to remember for many years to come.

Marshall told the Celtic View after the match: “To keep a clean sheet in the Nou Camp, that’s just unbelievable. I was really nervous, even if people didn’t think I showed it.

"The saves I made in the first half were ones I was expected to make. I made some good saves in the second half, and, above all else, I was just pleased to help out the team.

“In the hotel during the day before the game, it was a long day, especially when you know you’re starting. But you’ve just got to deal with it, which is exactly what all the lads have done here for the last few years now.”
