Griff on final Invincibles derby: It could have been five at half-time

By: Joe Donnelly on 29 Apr, 2020 16:01

  • IT speaks volumes of Celtic's ruthlessness during the Invincibles campaign that when you mention a 5-1 Glasgow derby victory, the first reply is always - which one?

Today marks the third-year anniversary of the second 5-1 derby win of that season, when the new six-in-a-row champions – crowned winners four weeks prior – confidently thwarted their rivals on their home patch.

A Scott Sinclair penalty got the ball rolling at Ibrox after seven minutes, before Leigh Griffiths near burst the net on 18. Callum McGregor made it three on 52, Dedryck Boyata hit four on 66, and the home side’s Kenny Miller pulled one back on 81.

Full-back Mikael Lustig would have the last laugh, however, when he capped off a mazy run with the neatest of finishes to make it five with just three minutes of normal time remaining – celebrating emphatically with his shirt over his head in front of the travelling Celtic support.

“The 5-1 game at Celtic Park that season will be remembered for Moussa’s hat-trick, and the first game against Rangers back in the league,” said Griffiths on a recent instalment of the official Celtic View podcast. “Before the second 5-1 game, we’d played them twice in six days, and we’d beaten them in the semi-final at Hampden.

“At Ibrox, I think the 5-1 scoreline was flattering for them, because the amount of chances we missed the first half was ridiculous.”

Griffiths added: “It could have been five at half-time. But to go to your rivals on their own back yard and beat them 5-1, as easily as we did, I think that was a day for the fans that they’ll never forget.

"For me as well, going there and winning 5-1 so easily, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played in.”
