Celtic Football Club condolences to the family of Jimmy Gordon

By: Paul Cuddihy on 02 Apr, 2020 21:24

  • JIMMY Gordon – Lord Gordon of Strathblane – who has succumbed to coronavirus at the age of 83 was a lifelong member of the Celtic Family who made a particular contribution to images of the club that we continue to hold dear.

In 1966, Jimmy was political editor of STV and the Celtic board invited him to make a film about the the club's origins. As the 1966/67 season wore on, it became apparent that it could be an historic season and a priceless film.

Jimmy travelled to Prague for the semi-final and then to Lisbon. He recalled: “The night before the game, I told Mr Kelly we didn’t have any passes for the camera crew. So he approached Hans Bargerter (general secretary of UEFA) and explained this was a film for Celtic supporters. He wrote two passes in the name of Cinema Celtic and that's what I called the company that did the film."

For future generations of Celtic supporters, the resultant footage has proved invaluable in conveying the atmosphere not only of the game but of the pilgrimage undertaken by thousands of Celtic supporters.

As the first managing director of Radio Clyde, he transformed Scottish radio – not least in terms of football coverage – which had previously been the monopoly of the BBC. He held a wide range of public offices in Scotland before being made a Labour peer in 1997, remaining active until the time of his death.

Sympathy is extended from everyone at Celtic Park to his family.
