Celtic View celebrates our greatest goalscorers - Stevie Chalmers

By: Joe Sullivan on 26 Mar, 2020 09:01

  • Over the next few weeks, the Celtic View will look at our 21 greatest goalscorers, which includes our current No.9, Leigh Griffiths, looking briefly at the careers of the men occupying the top scoring spots.

The picture above is the most iconic goal in Celtic's history and Stevie Chalmers has the distinction of being the man who scored it... the winning goal on May 25, 1967 in Lisbon's Estadio Nacional to give Celtic a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the European Cup final.

Sadly, the Celtic legend passed away in April last year at the age of 83. The Celtic Family mourned his loss while also giving thanks for everything he did for the Hoops throughout his life, not least that sunny day in May '67...

    Stevie Chalmers
    Appearances: 406
    Goals: 231
    Debut: Celtic 1-2 Airdrie; 10/03/1959

Stevie Chalmers scored 231 goals for Celtic during a 12-year career with the club, making him the fourth top goalscorer of all-time. Only Henrik Larsson (242), Bobby Lennox (277) and Jimmy McGrory (468) have scored more goals for Celtic.

Yet that trio of legends can’t claim to have score the single most important goal in Celtic’s history. Stevie Chalmers can. It came on Thursday, May 25, 1967 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon.

With just five minutes of the European Cup final remaining, Chalmers knocked home a Bobby Murdoch shot into the Inter Milan net to give Celtic a 2-1 victory and ensuring they became the first club from Northern Europe to lift the prestigious trophy.

Blessed with pace, goalscoring ability and a remarkable versatility, Stevie Chalmers is a true Celtic great and in his 12-year tenure as a Celtic player, he won four league championships, three Scottish Cups, four League Cups and that treasured European gong.
