  • Jullien: Scoring cup final winner is the best moment of my career

Jullien: Scoring cup final winner is the best moment of my career

By: Tony Connelly on 08 Dec, 2019 20:01

  • CHRISTOPHER Jullien said he was left speechless after scoring the winning goal in the Glasgow derby League Cup final at Hampden and summed up the achievement as the greatest of his career so far.

Celtic successfully defended the League Cup final against Rangers in a hard fought 1-0 win to clinch their 10th successive domestic trophy in three years.

There was little separating the two sides, and Fraser Forster came to Celtic’s rescue on numerous occasions to keep the champions in the game. At the other end Jullien made the difference 15 minutes into the second period when he side-footed in Ryan Christie’s set-piece.

The French defender struggled to put his emotions into words as he reflected on his decisive contribution he made in the game.

“Every time I go up, I’m looking to head the ball, but I didn’t think it would come through to me,” said Jullien. “When I saw it sit up for me I just reacted and it went in.

“I can’t describe the moment. I knew when it went in that there was a lot of time left in the game. I knew I couldn’t get carried away because I had to be really focused for the time left in the game. I’m really happy that goal got us the win today."

Lifting the League Cup marked the first time in his professional career that Jullien has won a trophy. He said getting his hands on the silverware was the best moment of his career to date.

“My friends and family know how much this meant to me,” he said. “I want to win and at my last club we weren’t able to achieve anything like this. Coming here and playing with the fantastic club and these players has been unbelievable.

“This is my first trophy and to do it at a club with these players, staff and fans is just unbelievable. I’m so happy right now. I’m going to enjoy tonight and then see what happens next. We’re going to enjoy this trophy but we know the season is long and we have a lot of games to play. This is just the beginning.

“This goal is the one that means the most to me. The one against Lazio was huge in my career but this one is the best because it gave me my trophy. It’s for sure the best day of my life in terms of what I’ve achieved in football.”
