Manager: Our fans helped to drive us on to victory in Rome

By: Paul Cuddihy in Rome on 07 Nov, 2019 22:20

  • REMEMBER, remember the seventh of November. Exactly seven years to the day that Neil Lennon led Celtic to an incredible 2-1 win over Barcelona at Paradise, the Irishman guided the Hoops to a historic first ever win on Italian soil as his Celtic side beat Lazio 2-1 in the Stadio Olimpico.

Goals from James Forrest and Olivier Ntcham delivered the momentous win, which also sees Celtic qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the third season in a row.

And the Celtic manager was understandably proud of his players’ efforts against a Lazio side currently fourth in Serie A, also praising the thousands of Celtic fans who cheered on the team from first minute until last.

“We’ve qualified for the next round, which is fantastic,” he said, “and we can maybe use the squad in some of the games coming up against Rennes and Cluj, but to have European football after Christmas is amazing.

“We should really sit back and enjoy what we’ve seen there – the quality of our play, the bravery on the ball, the defending at times, the goalkeeping – the sum of all parts really. What a team!

"I’m so happy for the fans. They were magnificent all night and even when we were a goal down, they were singing away and enjoying themselves, and you could just see them driving the team on.

“I said to the players, if you can build something, they will come and they have come in their thousands, and it’s a great night for them. It’s a great night for us all, really and we should bottle it and hold on to it.”
