Olivier Ntcham: Every Celtic fan can be proud of Lazio triumph

By: Joe Donnelly in Rome on 07 Nov, 2019 21:13

  • OLIVIER Ntcham’s 95th-minute winner against Lazio this evening (Thursday) marked the perfect end to a wonderful night of European football for Celtic in Rome. The Scottish champions’ 2-1 away win not only guarantees their place in the UEFA Europa League's knockout round of 32, but the triumph was also the first time the club has beaten an Italian team on Italian soil.

“It’s a great feeling and I’m very happy for my team,” said the matchwinner immediately after the match. “The atmosphere tonight was great and I’m so happy now. We managed the game a lot better in the second-half, because I think we started the game a little slower than we'd have liked.

“After the first goal, we got into the game and after that it was a great game to play in, and it was a great one for the supporters to be a part of too.”

The Frenchman, on as a second-half substitute for Ryan Christie, showed nerves of steel to dink the ball over opposition keeper, Thomas Strakosa, with seconds of play remaining, and was delighted to do so for the travelling Celtic faithful.

He added: “They looked so proud of the team. Every Celtic fan can be proud tonight. The way we played, the spirit of the team – it was really nice tonight.

“Before I came on, manager said to me, try to defend a little bit, press when possible and when we get the ball, try to play forward and keep the ball. It was a difficult angle, but it happened too quickly to explain. I was proud of my finishing tonight.

“Winning in Italy, breaking a record – that’s great news for everybody involved with the club.”
