Bauer eyes big contribution in the Hoops after dream start

By: Tony Connelly on 10 Sep, 2019 16:58

  • THE international break has given Moritz Bauer ample time to reflect on his brief Celtic debut, but the Hoops defender insisted he is determined to become a regular in the team and is relishing the opportunity to play at Paradise.

Just four days after joining the Scottish champions, Bauer made his Celtic debut when he came on as a second-half substitute for Kristoffer Ajer in the first Glasgow derby of the season.

The 2-0 win followed closely on the heels of qualification for the Europa League group stages and ensured Neil Lennon’s side went into the international break on a high.

Bauer admitted he couldn’t have hoped for a better start to his Celtic career and said he planned to work his way into the team as regular.

“I couldn’t have chosen a better start to be here. We qualified for Europe and won the first derby of the season, so it couldn’t have been a better start for me.

“I was really grateful. We had an amazing team effort on the pitch. For many players it was the first derby and the atmosphere we created with all the players, staff and fans was amazing.

“I’ve had exciting debuts. With Stoke my debut was at Old Trafford, so I think it’s meant to be to have my first game as a big one. When Elhamed went down after 15, I was warming up so I was warm enough when I came in.

“The trust and the faith the gaffer has shown, and the atmosphere created, made me feel like part of the team and I think that’s why we won the game.”

Celtic return to action in the league this Saturday away to Hamilton Accies before welcoming Kilmarnock the following week at Celtic Park.

Bauer said he has been hugely impressed by his new team-mates and said he hopes to start alongside them in the coming games.

“Hatem is really good and a different type of player,” said Bauer. “He played a great game. Not only him, but the whole back four were really solid and I think I’m a different type of full-back. I bring in my own qualities in terms of pace and being able to add to attack.

“I didn’t sign for one game. I hope to be part of the team for the whole season. We have a great squad and we showed that in the derby. I try to give everything in training and give the gaffer a selection headache. I want to be part of it.

“I’m looking forward to playing my first home game. I can’t wait to play at Celtic Park because it’s so iconic.”
