James Forrest: We’re delighted to progress in League Cup

By: Joe Donnelly on 17 Aug, 2019 20:00

  • JAMES Forrest scored Celtic’s matchwinner deep into extra time during today’s (Saturday) Betfred League Cup second round. After the 2-1 win against Dunfermline at Paradise, the winger applauded the resoluteness of the visitors, and said he was delighted to come off the bench to score.

“Fair play to Dunfermline, they played well and made it very hard for us,” said the 28-year-old. “We’re delighted to get through to the next round and that’s the most important thing.

“It took us to the second-half before we got into the game properly, and while we didn’t want to take the game to extra time, that can happen in cup ties sometimes. We set out to win this afternoon, and we’re delighted to have done that.”

Forrest admitted that despite scoring in the 114th minute, players generally don’t have time to think about the possibility of penalties during normal play.

He added: “As players, we don’t really think about penalty kicks on the pitch. The coaches might, but in fact, they tell us after 90 minutes that we had another half an hour to win it, and that’s what we did.

“Off the back of the disappointment of the game in midweek, to score today is a big achievement for me, it was an important goal and now we look forward to Thursday and the games that follow thereafter.

“We put in a good performance today, we wanted to have had created more chances and scored more goals than we did. But again, Dunfermline played very well and that’s full credit to them.”
