Celtic FC Esports take part in the 2019 CWL Championship

By: Newsroom Staff on 12 Aug, 2019 10:03

  • CELTIC FC Esports will support a team competing in the prestigious Call of Duty World League (CWL) Championship, which is the final stage of the popular esports annual tournament run by Activision.

The 2019 edition will be the seventh event and will determine the World Champions for the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 season. It will be held between August 14 and 18, 2019 at the Pauley Pavilion, the UCLA Bruins home basketball arena in Los Angeles, California, which has a capacity of over 12,000 spectators. There will be 32 teams involved and a prize pool of $2million.

After a successful performance and just missing out on the eFootball.Pro’s inaugural championship title against AS Monaco Esports, Celtic FC Esports are currently evaluating the possibility of expanding into other esports competitions.

Call of Duty is a hugely popular gaming title around the world, and the World League Championship is a world-class esports event that has attracted millions of online and offline viewers in recent years. The 2018 edition alone had over seven million views on Twitch and over five million hours watched online.

This will be a great opportunity for Celtic FC Esports to align with a world-class esports event. It will give the team worldwide exposure, before Activision converts the league into a city-based franchised model with slots going for $25million each. Franchises have already been sold to owners in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, and Toronto so far.

The team competing in the CWL Championship has five members: Sean ‘Seany’ O'Connor, Shea ‘QwiKeR’ Sweeney, Ben ‘Bance’ Bance, Byron “’Nastie’ Plumridge and Sam ‘Chain’ Dineley. Both Seany and QwiKeR are from Glasgow, and have been Celtic supporters their whole life. QwiKeR even managed to be at Celtic Park to see the Bhoys’ 7-0 League opener against St Johnstone before taking a flight to America for the start of the tournament preparations.
