Neil Lennon: We’re determined to bring positive Euro result home

By: Joe Donnelly in Romania on 07 Aug, 2019 12:01

  • CELTIC go into tonight’s UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first leg against CFR Cluj full of confidence. Neil Lennon said the Romanian champions are also in rude health, but he hopes to take a good result home to Glasgow next Tuesday.

“We respect Cluj and know that they negotiated a very tough tie in the last round,” said the manager. “We know how tough these ties can be and this one will be no different. They’re very well-organised and play somewhat of a British style of play in their football.

“I expect the game away from home to be as difficult as we’ve had so far in the campaign. This is Europe, away from home, against the Romanian champions.

“We’re prepared, obviously, but we’re respectful of the opposition. They have a number of great players in forward areas, they’ve got good energy and a good mentality. They move the ball from back quickly, they cross the ball well, they’re a threat at set plays.”

The manager praised Cluj manager and national legend Dan Petrescu – both as a coach and as a player he himself once played against – and signalled the virtues of using the first leg to learn the opposition’s style of play.

He added: “I always like to play the first tie away from home. It lets us take a good look at Cluj and hopefully we can take a positive result back to Glasgow.”
