  • Proud Huddle CSC is a club open to all

Proud Huddle CSC is a club open to all

By: Paul Cuddihy on 06 Aug, 2019 17:01

  • THE Proud Huddle Celtic Supporters’ Club has been up and running now since January 2018, and having seen the team secure the Double and Treble Treble, they, like the rest of the support, are hoping to emulate that success this time around, with the prospect of a ninth league title in a row an enticing one.

The CSC was formed by six individuals who hadn’t known each other prior to getting together at a meeting to discuss a variety of football issues.

The six – Chloe Divers, Iain Sharkey, Pauline Kelly, Lindsay Hamilton, Robert Cairney and Soraya Din – have two things in common. They are all Celtic supporters and they are all LGBT.

Their decision to form the Proud Huddle CSC – Celtic’s first LGBT supporters’ club – was motivated by a desire to develop friendships and to create a safe space to watch the Hoops.

Celtic’s 2-1 win at Firhill on January 23, 2018, courtesy of goals from Scott Sinclair and Leigh Griffiths, remains a significant one, as it was the first time the Proud Huddle CSC got together to cheer on the team. That was in the Admiral Bar in Glasgow’s city centre, and that remains their meeting place whenever Celtic are playing away from home.

One of the founding members, Lindsay Hamilton, explained: “To be honest, we didn’t find too many problems at Celtic Park. You do occasionally hear things, or get the odd comment, but on the whole, we didn’t really feel there was a major homophobic problem at Celtic Park.

“The group just stemmed from wanting to build friendships. We’re all Celtic fans and we’re LGBT, so we thought we’d form a supporters’ club.

“There is still homophobia which exists in football. That’s no secret, but we just felt that we wanted to do something off the back of enjoying one another’s company at that initial meeting. We’re just like-minded strangers who became pals very quickly.”

Celtic is a club open to all, and that has been an intrinsic part of the club and its supporters’ DNA since its inception.

For the Proud Huddle CSC, that’s an important aspect of being part of the Celtic Family, and it’s also an ethos of inclusivity that they have adopted for their own supporters’ club.

“The fact that we have a lot of non-LGBT members is a big thing for me,” said Lindsay. “That is one of the most important aspects of our club, and so important in any LGBT promotion, because you need allies.

“It’s fantastic that we have non-LGBT members, and the fact that we’re connecting through football and through Celtic makes all the difference. That’s what’s bringing us together and we sit and watch the Celtic games the same as every other supporter.

“We would all do that anyway, but the fact that non-LGBT people are coming along to be part of our club, sit down and watch the games, and talk about Celtic just as they would at any supporters’ club is important.”

The Proud Huddle CSC will be taking part in the Pride march in Glasgow on Saturday, August 17. You can get in touch with the club via Facebook @ProudHuddleC.S.C and Twitter @CelticCSCPride. You can also email [email protected]
