  • Tierney: Celts are fit and confident ahead of FK Sarajevo test

Tierney: Celts are fit and confident ahead of FK Sarajevo test

By: Newsroom Staff on 18 Jun, 2019 14:08

  • KIERAN Tierney said the Hoops squad have the experience necessary to overcome FK Sarajevo in their first Champions League qualifier and added the players are in the best position to do so having reported for pre-season training in excellent condition.

Celtic were drawn against the Bosnian champions, who won a domestic double last season, this afternoon in the first round of Champions League qualifications.

That leaves the eight-in-a-row Scottish champions with little over three weeks to prepare for their first competitive game. Tierney returned to training yesterday (June 17) for the first day of pre-season training along with the majority of the squad and said the team were already in excellent shape.

“It’s such a short break so we’re not coming back unfit,” said the 22-year-old full-back. “We’ll lose a bit but we’re still coming back in good shape and good condition.

“We know we’re going to get a good week’s training in here at home, a good week in Austria and then we’ll be ready for the challenges ahead.”

Tierney is adamant that he and the rest of the Hoops players will not underestimate their opponents. He said there were no easy games at this level but added confidence within the Celtic squad is high.

“You don’t get easy games or bad teams nowadays,” he said. “Every team is good and they know how to play football. They’re all well organised so there’s a clear standard to the football in that regard.

“They’re going to be hard to break down and they’ll come at us as well. We’re going into the unknown against a team we've never played and against players we’ve never faced. It’s a hard ask, but the expectation at Celtic is to win and go through and that’s what we’re planning to do.

“The confidence is always high at the start of the season. We’ve come back off the back of another treble. You can’t do any better than that. We’ve just won a trophy in our last game so going into our first competitive game we’re going to have confidence.”
