The Academy Bhoys behind the Treble Treble

By: Joe Sullivan on 11 Jun, 2019 15:29

  • THE Celtic Youth Academy has yeilded some of key players in the current Hoops squad and they played a crucial part in helping Celtic lift the unprecedented Treble Treble.

A total of 13 academy Bhoys featured in the historic achievement main names are, of course, James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney who have played the bulk of the games as first-team regulars over the past three seasons and perfectly illustrate the Celtic player pathway for young Academy hopefuls.

There are also two brothers in the Academy Treble Treble list as Ewan Henderson joined older brother, Liam before the elder sibling departed for Bari in Italy.

Another two players on the list have also moved on - Eoghan O’Connell who is now with Bury and Jamie McCart who is with Inverness Caley Thistle, while Jack Hendry was with the Celtic youth-set-up for seven years, but moved away as he reached 16-years-old and returned to the club last season from Dundee.

While Callum McGregor is the most high-profile and successful instance of going out on loan and returning to the club, other young Celts on the Academy Treble Treble list such as Anthony Ralston. Calvin Miller and Jack Aitchison have also benefited from going out on loan.

And the impact of the Celtic Youth Academy came to the fore on Trophy Day when no fewer than six Academy members were in the squad, and it was Mikey Johnston who scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Hearts while 16-year-old Karamoko Dembele made his debut.

This is an extract from the end-of-season special edition of the Celtic View. The 100-page Treble Treble bumper issue is on sale now.
