Neil Lennon: Title party is tremendous occasion for players

By: Joe Donnelly on 16 May, 2019 11:03

  • CELTIC welcome Hearts to Paradise for the final game of the 2018/19 Scottish Premiership campaign this weekend, and Hoops boss Neil Lennon can’t wait to see captain Scott Brown lift another league trophy.

Come Sunday, the manager aims for a positive result, and looks forward a special occasion and a great atmosphere on yet another title day at Celtic Park.

“It’s always a very special occasion, it’s always a great atmosphere,” said Neil Lennon. “Ultimately, it’s about Scott picking up the trophy and standing alongside a podium full of players who are deservedly the champions. We’ve done it eight times in a row, which is a very difficult thing to do.

“I also think Scott Brown is a modern-day great. He’s been one of the best players here for 25 years. He’s been leading the club for nine years. That’s a big responsibility and he’s carried it brilliantly. His influence, his quality of play, his personality.

“He reads the game brilliantly. His athleticism is brilliant, even at 33, and he’s got better with age. We wouldn’t have won a lot of games without Scott Brown, and I think that gets underplayed.”

Echoing the sentiments of Ryan Christie, Neil Lennon underscored that, regardless of one-off results, what the Scottish champions have achieved this year so far – an eighth successive title, a League Cup win and a Scottish Cup final – is a remarkable achievement.

Now, he plans to make history with back-to-back wins against Hearts, the latter game of which would secure a historic Treble Treble.

The manager added: “We won the league comfortably. Perhaps not as comfortable as some years, but not every year is going to be the same. The cup is very important. Not for me, but for the players and this big piece of history for the club.

“I still can’t believe I’m sitting here talking about a possible Treble Treble. That’s remarkable. These players have won two trophies out of two and are going for a third. What more can the players do? It’s pretty special.”
