Savoury finish gives Celtic Reserves victory over St Johnstone

    CELTIC… 3
    (Johnston 58, Henderson 62, Savoury 86)

    ST JOHNSTONE… 2
    (Wotherspoon 39, McKenzie 72)

CELTIC Reserves came out on top in a five-goal thriller against St Johnstone at Lennoxtown today (Monday), with substitute Grant Savoury netting a later winner for the Hoops. But there was still disappointment for the young Celts as, despite the win, results elsewhere meant they finished second in the SPFL Reserve League.

Fresh from winning the Glasgow Cup with a 3-2 win over Rangers last week, Tommy McIntyre’s side went into their final league game full of confidence, but they found themselves on the back foot in the early exchanges against an experienced Saints side.

Both Danny Swanson and David Wotherspoon had early chances before Armstrong Oko-Flex had Celtic’s first real chance on 24 minutes, but his shot was deflected off target. Six minutes before half-time, Wotherspoon gave the visitors the lead, driving into the box from a short corner before firing a low shot into the net.

Just before the break, Mikey Johnston had a chance after being set up by Karamoko Dembele, but his shot just went wide of the target.

Just before the hour mark, Celtic did manage to grab an equaliser, and it was another stunning free-kick from Johnston following his effort in the Glasgow Cup final last week. And on 62 minutes, Ewan Henderson unleashed a powerful shot which the goalkeeper could only parry, with Henderson following up to head home the rebound.

The visitors responded with their own equaliser on 70 minutes from Jamie McKenzie, and both sides continued to attack in search of the winning goal.

That duly arrived with four minutes of the match remaining, courtesy of Celtic substitute Savoury, who produced a lovely finish that went in off the post.

There was still time for Daniel Church to hit the woodwork with a header, but there was to be no further goals as the Reserves signed off their season with a 3-2 win.

CELTIC: Mullen, Coffey, Welsh, Deas, Church, Henderson, Robertson, Johnston, Dembele, Oko-Flex (Diver 75), Crossan (Savoury 75).
