  • Success of Celtic FC Foundation’s 2019 Inspiring Sport project

Success of Celtic FC Foundation’s 2019 Inspiring Sport project

By: Newsroom Staff on 15 Mar, 2019 10:47

  • CELTIC FC Foundation is delighted to announce the success of the 2019 Inspiring Sport Parasport event. Held at Motherwell’s Ravenscraig Sports Facility on Friday, March 8, the initiative, in collaboration with Scottish Disability Sport (SDS), aims to provide more opportunities in sport and physical activity for young people with physical, sensory and learning impairments across the West of Scotland and beyond.

The partnership has been in place for six years and has made a huge impact on the lives of young people and their families, boosting physical and mental health, social inclusion, and building confidence.

The Inspiring Sport project features a series of Parasport events, and is specifically aimed at young people with physical and sensory impairments who attend mainstream education.

The events deliver a wide range of sporting activities for participants to try, after which, specialist staff from Scottish Disability Sport direct the young people to local opportunities.  This year Parasport events are being held in Tayside, the West of Scotland, Lothian (including Borders and Fife), Forth Valley and Grampian.

Strong partnerships with organisations empowering young people, including Sportscotland Active Schools, and Education Services, enabled 98 participants from 54 schools across the West of Scotland to attend and enjoy various sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia, bowls, football, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

The sessions were delivered by various Scottish governing bodies of sport and included clubs from across the West of Scotland, with highly experienced and knowledgeable coaches on hand for advice and support.

Sports leaders from St Mungo’s Academy, Glasgow, and St Peter the Apostle High School, Clydebank, as well as volunteers from Barclays Bank and Scottish Student Sport assisted with all the activities, supporting the coaches and groups of participants.

Speaking on the success of the event, Gavin MacLeod, CEO, Scottish Disability Sport, said: “SDS would like to thank Celtic FC Foundation most sincerely for their ongoing support of the Inspiring Sport programme which includes the coordination of Parasport Festivals across Scotland.

“These Festivals are a tried and tested vehicle to engage school pupils with a disability in a wide variety of sports and encourage them to continue with regular participation. The West of Scotland Parasport Festival was particularly successful this year with 98 participants from 12 local authority areas in attendance.

“This was the 10th anniversary of this festival and it continues to play as important a role in engaging young disabled people in sport as it did in 2009.”

Tony Hamilton, Chief Executive, Celtic FC Foundation, added: “We are delighted to be part of another successful Inspiring Sport event at Ravenscraig. Together with our partners from SDS, we’ve made excellent progress throughout these past six years.

“Giving young people with disabilities the opportunity to get involved and thrive in sport is a key priority for Celtic FC Foundation and it is encouraging to see participants attending in large numbers across different sporting disciplines.

“Going forward, we are confident that the Inspiring Sport project, and its associated Parasport Festivals, will continue to grow and help many more young people in the future.”
