  • Celtic Women set for Friday-night football against Motherwell

Celtic Women set for Friday-night football against Motherwell

By: Paul Cuddihy on 14 Mar, 2019 15:59

  • EMMA Black has won everything there is to win in the Scottish women’s game, and many times over.

In an 11-year career with Glasgow City, she won 10 league titles, seven Scottish Cups and five League Cups, while she can also boast of scoring City’s first ever European goal with a strike against Athletic Bilbao in 2006. Add in 40 caps for Scotland and it makes for very impressive reading.

Now she’s hoping to bring all that experience, and a well-established winning mentality to Celtic, having joined the club for the 2019 season.

She had actually taken a step back from football just over three years ago, having just got married and with hopes to start a family, giving birth to her daughter, Sophia, two-and-a-half years ago.

But she returned to football last year, joining Motherwell and helping them gain promotion to the top tier of Scottish football, as well as reaching the Scottish Cup final. That, in turn, led to the move to Celtic.

This week’s Celtic View caught up with the Hoops defender to get her thoughts on life at Celtic and her hopes for the 2019 season.

How are you enjoying it at Celtic so far?

I’ve surprised myself by how much I’m enjoying it. The facilities, support and coaching is second to none. And the girls are all great. I knew quite a lot of them before I came on board, but they’ve all made me feel really welcome and part of the squad. I’m bringing my experience, and I want to help the club and the team be successful in every way I can. I’ve won so many league titles and cups in my career, and I want to bring that mentality to the team and be a success at Celtic.

How will it feel to face your old team, Motherwell, on Friday?

There are a lot of the players who have left Motherwell and only a few have stayed. It will be strange, although a lot of players have left Motherwell since last season. But I’ve got a lot to thank Motherwell for. They brought me back in and I just found my love for the game again, and I thought, I’ve got another few years left in me, so why am I retiring early? You’re a long time retired, they say. At that time, when I was 28, I thought I was ready to retire. I was married, had just brought my first home and was looking to start a family, and there was more to life than football… but now I’ve done that, and I feel that, I’m still only 31 and I can bring my experience into a new team and create a winning mentality, which is what I’m trying to do.

What are the aims for the 2019 season?

Our aim is to break into the top two and hopefully win a trophy too, which would be an added bonus. For a team like Celtic, we’ve got to be pushing to break through that and be challenging. We can’t just be happy having finished third for the past few seasons – that’s obviously not good enough now, and we’ve got to raise the standards. I hope we’re doing that, and the results have shown that. We’ve got Glasgow City in the League Cup and it would be great to win. It’s going to be tough against City. Last season, it was close although they were still beating us, but we feel we’re better, stronger, fitter and tactically aware. If we can get that one win, it will just give us more confidence and an added boost to the squad that we can say, yes we are good enough to compete and beat these teams.

Celtic take on Motherwell in a 7:45pm kick off on Friday, March 15 at K-Park in East Kilbride.
