Five-star Celts sink Spartans in Edinburgh

    Spartans… 1

    Celtic… 5
    (Ewens 2, Craig 2, McGovern)

Celtic produced a five-star performance as they returned to league action with a 5-1 victory over Spartans in Edinburgh. Sarah Ewens and Chloe Craig both scored two goals apiece, while Kathleen McGovern also netted, and there were four assists in the game for midfielder, Kirsty McLaughlin.

For the fifth game on the bounce, the Celts opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes, with Ewens’ header in the ninth minute beating keeper Rachel Harrison from a McLaughlin corner. Six minutes later, the two players combined again to make it 2-0, with McLaughlin floating in a free-kick from outside the area for Ewens to volley it home.

Celtic were dominating the match without adding to their goals tally, though McGovern came close with a chance that was just off target.

Both sides were battling the elements as well as competing against each other, and into the second-half, the Hoops continued to surge forward in search of more goals.

Eight minutes after the restart, great work from Natalie Ross in the middle of the park found Josi Giard who worked her way into the area, only for the hosts to clear, and Keenan’s follow up was easily held by the Spartans keeper.

On 75 minutes, McGovern fired a ball into the box for Cheryl McCulloch, whose effort went agonisingly wide. However, just four minutes later, Celtic got their just rewards with a third goal courtesy of Chloe Craig.

Giard cut in along the byline and put the ball into the area. Spartans cleared Celtic’s efforts, but only as far as Craig, whose stinging shot was too powerful for the Spartans keeper.

Spartans reduced the deficit towards the end of the game with a goal from a free-kick, but two more goals for Celtic in injury-time, from Kathleen McGovern and Chloe Craig, ensured a convincing 5-1 victory over the Hoops.

CELTIC: Cunningham, Keenan (Craig 75), Crosbie, Clark. Black, Giard, Ross (Hay 80), McLaughlin, Smart (McCulloch 72, Ewens (Donaldson 22), McGovern.
    Subs not used: Cairney, O’Neill.
