Neil Lennon hails magnificent performance in Scottish Cup win

By: Joe Donnelly on 02 Mar, 2019 20:53

  • CELTIC progressed to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup this evening (Saturday), by beating Hibs 2-0 at Easter Road. Two spectacular goals from James Forrest and Scott Brown capped off a comprehensive win, and Hoops boss Neil Lennon praised his side’s magnificent second-half performance.

Despite a somewhat frustrating opening 45 minutes, the Scottish champions opened up the game during the second period, and in turn created a number of chances in front of goal, while defending resolutely at the opposite end.

Speaking after the game, the manager described the win as outstanding in the wake of what he considers a very difficult week for his players.

“I am absolutely delighted, I got everything I wanted,” said Neil Lennon of the quarter-final win. “I thought it was an outstanding performance from the team. We had total control, and I thought that was the best I’ve seen them play for a while.

“We had a brilliant mentality, it’s been a very difficult week for them all – physically and emotionally – so for them to go out and play they way they did, particularly in the second-half, speaks volumes for this group of players.”

The manager described any visit to Easter Road as difficult, and said he was delighted with how his side responded against a disciplined Hibs side in the second-half.

Likewise, Neil Lennon hailed Hoops stalwarts Forrest and Brown, both of who he managed during his first managerial spell at Paradise between 2010 and 2014.

Neil Lennon added: “I haven’t seen Celtic play like that Against Hibs for a while, especially at Easter Road. The manner of the goals was brilliant too, and I couldn’t have asked for more from the players.

"With Forrest and Brown scoring goals, it was like going back in time. They were with me when I was first here and nine years later, they’re still outstanding footballers at this club. For me, they’re two Celtic greats, and they’re still writing chapters in the time they have here.

“Today, I’ve moved Jamesy into a more central position because we weren’t affecting between the lines enough. We did that just about 10 minutes before half-time, and then John made a few tweaks tactically as well, just to give us better control of the game. The second-half was magnificent.

“I want the players to have a rest, mentally and physically, but it’s a great way to finish what’s been a difficult week for them. The players are all champing at the bit to play which is great for me.”
