Scott Brown: We want to keep our European adventure going

By: Tony Connelly on 14 Feb, 2019 10:01

  • SCOTT Brown believes the accomplishment of getting out of an extremely tough UEFA Europa League group reflected more than just the quality of this Celtic team and insisted the Bhoys were determined to continue on their European path.

Speaking exclusively the official matchday programme ahead of tonight’s last 32 tie against Valencia at Celtic Park, Brown said: “We’ve shown at Celtic Park that we can beat and match anyone. Manchester City came here a couple of seasons ago and struggled to play with the crowd on top of them. We gave them a shock and got a point. Celtic Park is always a hard place to come to but we want that all the way through Europe.

“We’re not finished here. It doesn’t stop at getting through the group and securing European football after Christmas. We want to push on as far as we possibly can in the tournament.”

The last 32 of the UEFA Europa League is comprised of many big names, including Inter Milan, Napoli, Arsenal, Chelsea and, Celtic’s opponents, Valencia.

Brown recognises the challenge which Celtic face tonight, but in the Hoops captain, Celtic have an in-form leader who has more European experience than any other Scottish player.

“They’re going to want to keep the ball and press us high up the park,” he said. “We’re going to expect that and in recent weeks we’ve been really good at keeping the ball, moving it form the back and breaking teams down.

“We’ve been dictating play as opposed to teams dictating the play against us. Here’s hoping we can do that against Valencia. We know it’s a different level of quality and that they’re going to be fantastic in many areas. It’s about what we do on and off the ball as well though. We have to be structurally very solid all the way through the park.

“We’ve looked at how they press and how they like to play, especially when they’re away from home because teams play differently when they’re away from home in Europe.”
