Brown: Scottish Cup goal was up there with my best

By: Tony Connelly on 10 Feb, 2019 19:01

  • SCOTT Brown admitted his wonder goal in Celtic’s 5-0 Scottish Cup win against St Johnstone was up there with the best in his career, but added that Celtic’s pace in the final third was the crucial ingredient in the victory.

The Celtic captain added his name to the scoresheet in sensational fashion this afternoon (Sunday) when he scored the second goal in Celtic’s 5-0 win. His strike from 30 yards rifled into the top corner and helped the Hoops progress to the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.

Speaking to the media after the game, Brown admitted that he was pleased with his contribution but was quick to highlight the importance of the result over his goal.

“They don’t come around that often,” he said. “I struck it sweat and managed to hit the target. I’ve had a couple of shots in the last couple weeks so I’ve managed to get further forward. It’s different when you have two in the middle of the park. It was good for me to get forward and get the goal.

“I don’t know why the fans want me to shoot. Usually when I do they shout 'Sebo' after it! It was one of those that's one in a hundred. I managed to hit sweet and it goes into the top corner. It’s up there but my one against Rangers is probably the best one for me.

“The main thing for us was we got through to the next round. It was a good professional performance and another clean sheet.”

Oliver Burke was on fine form during the game as he used his pace and power to great effect to assist for two of the five goals. Brown heaped praise on the 21-year-old and pointed to the wealth of pace Celtic now had in the final third.

“Oliver Burke is by far the quickest that I’ve played with,” he said. “He knows nine times out of 10 he’s going to beat anyone for pace and Scotty was in the right place as well.

“People won’t keep a high line because of his pace. With our forwards, we have pace everywhere in Ollie, Scotty, James and Timo. We have pace all over the park and if scares people more than anything. If people want to press the game we have that long pass in-behind that Ollie, Timo, James and Scotty can take up and run through on goal."
