Celtic sit proudly in European Football's One Million Club

By: Newsroom Staff on 18 Jan, 2019 11:41

  • IT has been revealed today that Celtic Football Club has achieved the ninth highest level of attendances across all European football clubs.

In a wide ranging UEFA-commissioned report, released today, covering all aspects of the game across the continent, Celtic has been named as one of only 15 clubs to achieve an aggregate attendance of over ONE MILLION fans for home League matches, with the Club sitting proudly in ninth position, alongside Europe's other major clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

With an average attendance of 57,523 across season 2017/18, Celtic's aggregate attendance for the period across League matches, was a phenomenal 1,092,937, support for which the Club is hugely appreciative and grateful.

The report issued today, entitled 'The European club footballing landscape', is UEFA's annual benchmarking report which investigates a variety of indicators across the game and looks at a broad range of issues affecting European football.

This year, the landmark of 10 years of collecting club-by-club data has been reached and the report recognises this 10-year theme throughout.

The following themes are also highlighted:

    1. The significant improvement in underlying health of European club football.

    2. Financial polarisation and variation across European top division football.

    3. The ever changing environment off the pitch.

Today’s report follows an independent study released by the Fraser of Allander Institute at the end of 2018, outlining the scale of Celtic’s contribution to the Scottish economy each year.

The economic study revealed that the spending of Celtic and their supporters was worth £165MILLION to the Scottish economy, helping to support the equivalent of 2,820 full-time equivalent jobs in Scotland. Such a boost to Scotland’s economy was identified not just as a one-off, but one which occurs annually.

The report which also identified Celtic as that 25th strongest brand in world football, found that 40 per cent of Celtic’s day-to-day spending was with Scottish firms.

The club is particularly important to the Glasgow economy, with  a net inflow into the city of over one million people in the course of the season, mainly from within Scotland. However, 54 per cent of visitors from outside Scotland who visit the city to attend games stay in paid accommodation for an average of 1.7 nights. The report estimates that there are just over 90,000 bed nights related to matches in Glasgow featuring Celtic over the course of a season.

Celtic’s social contribution was also covered by the report which observed that 'The work of  Celtic FC Foundation is quite unlike standard football club foundations in scale and scope, with its focus on improving heath, promoting equality, encouraging learning and tackling poverty.'
