Ryan Christie: We want to go as far as we can in Europe

By: Joe Donnelly on 13 Jan, 2019 12:01

  • ON their return from the mid-season winter training camp, Celtic will play six games in less than three weeks in both the Scottish Cup and the SPFL. After that, the Hoops welcome Valencia to Paradise in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.

Ryan Christie has described every game as crucial, but admitted he is really looking forward to European football in February.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, Christie said: “Valencia is a great fixture to look forward to, and it’s really exciting. Of course, there are plenty of important games before that in the Scottish Cup and the league, but when that game comes around, we’ll be looking forward to it so much.

“We’re by no means in this competition to make up the numbers, and we want to go as far as we can. It’ll be a tough fixture, don’t get me wrong, but we’re confident in our ability to progress.”

Christie picked up an ankle injury during the Scottish champions’ final game of Group B against FC Salzburg last month, which ruled him out of subsequent games against Hibernian at Easter Road and Motherwell at Paradise.

At the time, the 23-year-old thought the ankle knock was much worse than it turned it out to be.

“I was very fortunate with my injury against Salzburg, actually,” he said. “When it initially happened on the park, I was told that it might be broken, and as soon as you hear that you think you might be out for a long time. This was hard to hear, especially when I thought I’d hit a bit of form during that period of the season.

“Initially, I thought it could have been a real scare, I could have been very unfortunate, but I was very lucky to be back so soon and managed to get a few games in before the break.”
