Manager: Celts thoroughly deserved win over Aberdeen

By: Tony Connelly on 26 Dec, 2018 17:12

  • BRENDAN Rodgers said Celtic’s ‘brilliant performance’ made them thoroughly deserving of their win against Aberdeen and praised his players’ mentality to turn the game around in the dying minutes.

Celtic came out on top in a thrilling 4-3 encounter with Aberdeen at Pittodrie to extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Scott Sinclair scored his 50th Celtic goal shortly after kick-off and secured his second hat-trick in the Hoops by the final whistle. The defining period of the game though was the last eight minutes which was comprised of four goals.

Derek McInne’s side made it 2-2 with eight minutes remaining but substitute Odsonne Edouard helped turned the game around with a wonderful goal and an assist for Sinclair’s third. The home side reduced the lead in the final minute but Celtic were maintained the lead and were deserving winners in the end.

Speaking after the game Brendan Rodgers lauded his side’s performance in a hard fought game and added the mentality within the team was crucial to securing the win.

“It was a very good game,” said the manager. “We thoroughly deserved to win. We really earned the victory today with a brilliant performance.

“We had good control for large parts of the game. I have no doubt that whatever goes against them in the game they’ll keep playing and get their reward.

“We just focus on our job. We know when we play Aberdeen in any of these big games we have to fight and have those battling qualities. At the same time, you have to have that calmness. It’s important that the players have that and they showed that today.”

The manager also credited Sinclair for his contribution in such an important game and singled out Edouard for praise.

“He knows where the goal is and wants to be in there to score,” said the manager. “He’s done it since he was 16 years of age. In big games he’s always produced and he loves that type of occasion.

“All his finishes were very good and young Odsonne coming into the game made a big difference in relation to our penetration in behind. For his goal to score with that composure and poise was a brilliant finish to dink the keeper. You could see his speed and power to get through to square for Scott’s hat-trick.”

Kieran Tierney was not in the squad and the manager gave an update on whether fans can expect to see him in Saturday’s (December 29) game against Rangers.

“He’s clearly a question mark so we’ll see how he is in the next 48 hours,” he said. “If not, it’s unfortunate but as we’ve seen with the young guys there’s other guys who can come into the squad and it’s an opportunity.”
