Tierney: We showed our character in Europa League win

By: Tony Connelly on 09 Nov, 2018 08:31

  • KIERAN Tierney was delighted with Celtic's performance in their 2-1 win against RB Leipzig in the Europa League on Thursday night, a victory which has given the Hoops a fighting chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

Brendan Rodgers' side gave Celtic fans a European night to remember with a thrilling performance against the Bundesliga side at Paradise.

Tierney scored his first goal of the season when he fired Celtic ahead early in the game with an excellent left-footed strike. The Bundesliga side equalised with 12 minutes remaining, but the Scottish champions showed their character and took the lead again just 13 seconds later when Odsonne Edouard converted Ryan Christie’s cross from close-range.

Speaking after the thrilling and well-deserved win, Tierney admitted he was elated to have scored in a big European game but added the result was the happiest part of the night.

“As long as we got the result, a goal’s an added bonus,” he said. “The most positive thing is the way we reacted from losing the goal. In Europe in the past we’ve maybe put our heads down when we conceded but this time we bounced back wonderfully.

“It was great to get that goal early on. If it drags on, then it can get a wee bit edgy. The fans were behind us from the first minute, as always. That’s the main thing in games like this, you need your fans and against Leipzig we had. It made the difference, they always do, and I’d like to thank every single one of them.

“It was perfect for me to score right in front of that corner. Everybody knows I’d be celebrating in that corner even if I hadn’t!”

Tierney also said the character the team showed to respond to conceding a goal was excellent, especially against such high-level opposition.

“We’re all delighted with the performance, especially with the character we showed after the goal,” he said. “They’re going to get chances. They’re a great German team, so to come up against a top team like that and win is exactly what we needed.

“We never had a chance to speak to each other after conceding the goal but we were in sync and knew we needed to respond right away. We knew what we had to do and thankfully we did that.

“Cal gave me the ball from centre and the easiest thing would have been to go back, but Scott made a good move for me so we did a one-two and he played the ball through to Ryan. It was great play from Ryan and he made a fantastic assist, and Odsonne was there with a good finish.

“Ryan’s brought life to the team and he thoroughly deserves all the credit he’s getting at the minute. I’m delighted for him because his hard work over the years has paid off.”
