Celtic light up Paradise with Europa League win over RB Leipzig

  • UEFA Europa League
    Matchday Four
    Thursday, November 8, 2018
    Celtic Park, Glasgow

    (Tierney 11, Edouard 79)

    (Augustin 78)

ODSONNE Edouard marked his 50th appearance for Celtic with a stunning match-winner against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League on a night when the Paradise lightshow made its debut and helped create an incredible atmosphere to propel the team to a memorable victory.

Kieran Tierney opened the scoring for the Scottish champions with an unstoppable first-half strike, before Jean-Kevin Augustin pulled the Bundesliga side level with 12 minutes to go. However, within 60 seconds Celtic were back in front as Edouard capped off a wonderful move to put the Hoops 2-1 ahead and ultimately take all three points in a thrilling Group B encounter.

It was the visitors who started the match on the front foot, although the Hoops dealt well with the pressure and began to play themselves into the match, with Tom Rogic orchestrating the attacking moves from the centre of the pitch.

And on 11 minutes, Brendan Rodgers' side took the lead with a goal straight out of the Celtic Youth Academy. Callum McGregor took a quick free-kick, finding James Forrest on the right flank. He glided beyond the Leipzig left-back before shifting inside and firing a ball across the area to Kieran Tierney. The Hoops defender took a touch before rifling a shot past Yvon Mvogo to put his side 1-0 ahead.

The visitors responded by pressing forward, and midfielder Konrad Laimer whipped a ball in from the right into the path of Augustin. Craig Gordon gathered bravely at the striker’s feet, who was booked for the challenge on the Hoops keeper.

From there, the home side settled into their stride. A blistering run from Scott Sinclair ended with a signature left-foot drive from Rogic that went just over. Another half-chance was carved by Edouard shortly after, but the centre-forward’s by-line cut-back was intercepted before reaching Sinclair.

On the half-hour mark, Forrest had a snap shot deflected out for a corner, and, minutes later, a fierce ball into the box from Tierney found Edouard. The Frenchman controlled on his chest, but his drive was cleared by left-back Marcelo Saracchi.

The second half started with similar intensity, and Sinclair capitalised on a defensive lapse to drive towards goal. Leipzig covered quickly, however, and Rogic couldn't latch on to the loose ball. Just before the hour mark, the ever-impressive Callum McGregor made space on the right, before crossing for Edouard who, in turn, forced a low save from Mvogo.

After a spell of pressure and possession, Leipzig pushed for an equaliser and Bruma sent a shot whizzing over the bar. At the other end, Forrest made a brilliant burst down the right before crossing for Edouard, whose shot was turned away for a corner.

With 12 minutes of normal time remaining, the visitors grabbed an equaliser. Konrad Laimer's ball into the box found Augustin, who headed home from two yards out.

It was a blow but Brendan Rodgers' side responded in spectacular style. A wonderful run from Sinclair was matched by a blistering run through the inside-left channel by Ryan Christie, and when the pass was made to him, he burst into the box and slid a perfect pass across the six-yard box for Edouard to slot the ball home.

It was the perfect match-winning goal to light up Paradise and give the Hoops all three points.
